pRIODONTITIS tREATMENT IN 24H

For patients coming from a distance we apply the full mouth disinfection protocol. The initial, non-surgical periodontal treatment is completed in exactly the same manner within 24 hours, supported with laser treatment and the use of chlorhexidine antiseptic mouthwash.

In these cases, we consider it important to be in communication with your regular dentist in your home place so that there is a coordinated monitoring of your case, both in the healing phase and in the maintenance phase of the treatment.

The 24h-full-mouth-disinfection is usually applied to patients who come from a distance and find it difficult to visit our office many times.

Full-mouth-disinfection protocol
The non-surgical periodontal treatment is a cause related therapy aiming at removal of bacterial deposits from periodontal pockets. To achieve this therapeutic goal we apply root planning, laser disinfection therapy and patient tailored oral hygiene instructions.

The non-surgical treatment of periodontitis is traditionally performed in 4-5 appointments with a few days apart. The question arouse whether the same treatment results can be achieved in fewer visits within 24 hours. The protocol was termed as “Full mouth disinfection protocol”.

Scientific studies compared the clinical effectiveness of the two protocols (multiple visits VS fewer visits). The clinical scientific studies showed the same results between the two protocols (traditional and full mouth disinfection) (Eberhard et al. 2005). We still need to perform a reevaluation of the treatment result 2-3 months after the completion of initial therapy.

The “Full mouth disinfection protocol” aims mainly for patient’s convenience with time restrictions, since clinical appointments are performed in tight intervals, with the same treatment results.
