Periodontitis treatment
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the gums. Practically, it represents a volume of inflamed tissue around teeth. Almost 50% of population is affected by some form of disease, while a 10% suffers by a severe form of periodontitis risking complete loss of his/her teeth.
Periodontitis is caused by bacterial plaque in combination with the patient’s compromised immune system towards these specific bacteria (meaning that some patients may have bacterial plaque but they do not suffer from periodontitis).
Periodontitis is also affecting general heath through systemic inflammation. Bacteria disseminate in the whole body through bleeding gums. Scientific studies have established the link between Periodontitis, Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Pregnancy and more.
In our practice we follow the latest evidence based protocols in the treatment of periodontitis.
Aim
Our aim is to save your teeth, to maintain esthetics and function and avoid treatment with implants or dentures.
First appointment
In the first appointment we perform a full mouth evaluation and we discuss with you the prognosis and the suggested treatment plan.
Treatment
Most often, treatment of periodontitis begins with the non-surgical therapy, meaning removal of bacterial deposits and resolution of the infection, by means of root scaling, laser, antiseptics etc. It is important to know that the entire treatment can be carried out under local anesthesia.
The non-surgical therapy can be completed in 2-5 appointments depending in the severity of the situation and availability of the patient. For patients that visit us from a distance we apply the 24h-Full-mouth-Disinfection Protocol (https://www.gperio.gr/en/periodontitis-treatment-in-24h-full-mouth-disinfection-protocol/), a protocol with the same proven efficiency.
After the completion of non-surgical therapy, the healing phase follows. You receive detailed instructions on what to do at home in order to achieve the maximum potential for healing.
Re-assessment
When the healing phase is completed (4-10 weeks) we perform re-assessment to evaluate the degree of resolution of periodontitis.
In case of remaining deep pockets we can apply corrective surgical treatment, based on specific clinical criteria. Surgical treatment can be either respective or regenerative, depending on specific factors.
Aftercare - supportive periodontal therapy
The long-term success of periodontal treatment depends on two factors: your own oral hygiene and regular care from your dentist or periodontist. It is important for the patient to follow a strict maintenance protocol to prevent relapse of the disease.
We support you on implementing the maintenance protocol that fits your own case. To facilitate this important phase we encourage you to be in communication with your home dentist so we collaborate together with the aim of maintaining your teeth.
